Introduction

Background of Standard Formulation and Technical Evolution

The CGA V-1 standard was formulated by the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Cylinder Valve Committee to minimize the risk of dangerous misconnections by standardizing valve outlet and inlet connection dimensions. Since its first systematic formulation after World War II in 1945, it has undergone six major updates. The 2023 Sixteenth Edition includes 129 standard valve outlet connections, covering 278 different compressed gases and gas mixtures (see Table 1, 2, 3). The latest version adds the CGA 971 double-pin connection for xenon and updates gas distributions for CGA 350, 660, 716, and 724.


Core Technical Framework and Connection Classification

The standard categorizes outlet connections into four basic types: internal/external threads, right-hand/left-hand threads. Misconnection prevention is achieved through a stepped distribution of thread diameters (adjacent specifications do not mesh), valve seat shapes, and seal arrangements. Thread systems include NGO (National Gas Outlet), UN (Unified), ACME, and Whitworth. Left-hand threads are identified by V-shaped grooves on hexagonal nuts.

Medical Gas Safety System: Pin Index Safety System

Section D specifically defines medical gas connections. The Pin Index Safety System (based on CGA 860 reference diagram) achieves misconnection prevention through double-pin positioning, limiting its use to E-size cylinders and smaller (except CGA 950 for respiratory air). The system provides over 20 non-interchangeable combinations, such as: CGA 870 (Medical Oxygen, pins 2-5), CGA 880 (Carbon Dioxide/Oxygen mixture, pins 2-6), and CGA 965 (Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen, single pin 7). All medical connections must bear labels for pharmaceuticals or medical devices and comply with FDA or Health Canada regulations.


Ultra-High Purity Service Connections (UHIS)

Section C covers the CGA 630/710 series of ultra-high purity connections, designed for gases with stringent leak rate requirements, such as those in the electronics industry. This series utilizes Nickel 200 gaskets, surface roughness ≤10 Ra, anti-rotation pins/lugs, and achieves leak rates ≤1×10⁻⁷ atm·cc/sec (Helium). Typical applications include: CGA 632 (Arsine, Phosphine), CGA 718 (Inert gases), CGA 724 (Hydrogen, Methane).


Residual Pressure Valves (RPV) and Filling Station Connections

Starting from the Fourteenth Edition, the standard unified the outlet and filling adapter dimensions for Type 1 and Type 2 Residual Pressure Valves (RPV), identified by an "R" suffix (e.g., CGA 320R, 540R, 680R). These adapters are restricted to use at filling stations and are strictly prohibited for use at the cylinder site. Designs must withstand 500 cycle tests and have a minimum burst pressure of four times the rated pressure.


Implementation Recommendations and Precautions

  1. Marking and Labeling: The only reliable identification method is the chemical name label on the cylinder. CGA C-7 provides classification and labeling guidelines.
  2. Adapter Limitations: Adapters are permitted only between standard/alternative/limited standard connections for the same gas, and connecting high-pressure sources to low-pressure equipment is prohibited. This is especially forbidden for DOT-4L/TC-4LM cryogenic containers.
  3. On-site Inspection: Regularly check for thread wear and seal aging. For medical Pin Index connections, verify pin-to-hole alignment before each use.
  4. Training: Operators must be familiar with the CGA connection numbering system, pressure classes, and identification of RPV-specific adapters.

CGA V-1—2023 is not merely a technical specification but a cornerstone for safe operations in the gas industry. Its rigorous dimensional chain design, multi-layered misconnection prevention mechanisms, and continuous version updates effectively reduce the risk of gas misconnections, ensuring safety across a wide range of scenarios from industrial manufacturing to medical rescue.
