Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

BS ISO 9211-3:2024 is an alternative version of ISO 9211-3:2008. It systematically standardizes the durability test methods of optical coatings under various environmental conditions. The standard divides the use scenarios into four standard categories AD and special category O, corresponding to different environmental severity levels.

Major Technical Changes

  • Added environmental test code labeling system (Clause 4.1)
  • Integrated the original Appendix A test sequence into the main text table
  • Clarified the application rules of mixed test sequences for Category O
  • Added the severity levels of ISO 9022-2/Amd.1 and ISO 9022-4/Amd.1

Comparative analysis of usage categories

Category Applicable scenarios Typical tests Number of samples
Category A Inside the sealed device -25℃ hot and cold cycle 1
Class B Controlled environment 50 wipes + salt spray test 2
Class C Conventional outdoor 100 wipes + boiling water test 3
Class D Harsh outdoor Eraser test + salt spray 24h 4

Key test methods

1. Mechanical durability test

Including Cloth/eraser test (four levels: 50/100 wipes and 20/40 erasers) and Tape adhesion test (three methods: slow/fast/instant pull).

2. Environmental tolerance test

  • Temperature cycle: -50℃~+70℃ (Class D)
  • Damp heat test: 95%RH/55℃ for 16 hours (Class C)
  • Salt spray corrosion: 35℃ salt spray for 24 hours (Class D)

Implementation suggestions

Drawing marking specifications

Clause 5.1 of the standard stipulates that the category code (such as "Category B") can be directly marked. Non-standard tests must be listed in a table:

 | Test steps| Test code| Description| Sample| |----------|-------------------|----------------------| | 1 | ISO 9022-12-08 | Damp heat test| √ |

Precautions for the influence of substrates

Clause 4.6 of the standard specifically points out that the durability of the coating actually depends on the coating-substrate combination system. A qualified coating on a glass substrate may fail on a sensitive substrate.

Technology evolution analysis

Compared with the 2008 version, the 2024 version mainly strengthens:

  1. Standardized expression of test codes (Figure 1/Figure 2)
  2. New requirements for acetone/ethanol solvent separation tests
  3. Introduction of ISO 9211-5~8 related severity levels

The standard particularly emphasizes the flexible application of Category O, which can meet customized needs through the combination of "main category + special requirements" (such as "Category C; Adhesion according to Category B").
