Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

BS ISO 6021:2024 established the first internationally unified technical specification for fire generators, which is applicable to the process of ignition of buildings by fire rain in simulated wild urban interface (WUI) fires. The main body of the standard contains 7 technical chapters and 1 informative appendix, focusing on standardizing equipment construction parameters, operating procedures and repeatability verification methods.

Key points for standard implementation

1. Specification of fire material:It is recommended to use Japanese cypress chips (28±8mm×18±6mm×3±1mm) as the standard fuel, and its combustion characteristics are highly similar to the fire generated by actual building fires (see standard Figure 3 for comparison data).

2. Key operating parameters:The three core variables of wood chip feed rate (80g/min), blast speed (4m/s) and combustion chamber temperature need to be strictly controlled, which is the key factor to ensure the repeatability of the test.

3. Equipment verification requirements: Chapter 7 of the standard clearly requires that the user unit should verify the output stability of the equipment through mass flux measurement and fire size distribution analysis.


Comparison with traditional test methods

Appendix A of the standard compares in detail the differences between the ISO standard fire generator and the traditional woodpile test method:

  • Control accuracy:The generator can accurately control the fire size (0.35cm screen), mass flux and duration
  • Test efficiency:The continuous working mode can simulate the continuous fire rain attack in an actual fire
  • Data comparability:Replication tests by the US IBHS and Portugal ADAI laboratories have demonstrated excellent cross-institutional consistency

Standard application suggestions

For different test scenarios, please note the following when implementing the standard:

  1. Building component testing: It is recommended to use the generator in conjunction with the radiation panel to simulate compound thermal attack conditions
  2. Vegetation fire research: Douglas fir and other local tree species can be used to adjust the characteristics of fire sources
  3. Urban fire simulation: Input parameters need to be dynamically adjusted based on informal settlement fire data

The release of this standard solves the long-standing problem of standardization of WUI fire research equipment and provides a scientific assessment tool for building fire protection design and vegetation management.
