Introduction

Standard Evolution and Scope of Application

BS ISO 5288:2024 is the official implementation standard for the UK terminology system for synchronous belt drives as an alternative to ISO 5288:2017. The standard was developed by ISO/TC 41/SC 4 Technical Committee, and the main update is the addition of the Symbol Definition chapter (Chapter 4).

Analysis of the core terminology system

3.1 General terminology

Terminology Definition points Chart corresponding
Synchronous belt drive system Composed of at least one synchronous belt and pulley, transmitting synchronous motion through tooth and groove engagement Figure 1
Center distance (C) The shortest distance between the two pulley axes under a specified measuring force Figure 1

3.2 Synchronous belt classification

trapezoidal toothed belts (3.2.2.1) and curved toothed belts (3.2.2.2):

  • Trapezoidal teeth: tooth sides contain only straight lines (Figure 9)
  • Curved teeth: tooth sides or tooth tops contain curves (Figure 10)

Typical applications: Curved teeth are suitable for high-speed and heavy-load conditions, such as automobile engine timing systems

3.3 Pulley parameter system

Geometric parameters Definition formula Measurement method
Pitch circle diameter (d) d =

  • Tooth angle 2β (deg)
  • Pitch line difference a (mm)
  • Minimum pulley width bf/b'f/b''f (mm)

Project implementation suggestions

  1. Selection basis: Determine the belt type according to 3.2.1.5 pitch length Lp and 3.2.1.6 belt width bs
  2. Match tolerance: Refer to 3.3.1.10 to measure the pulley groove clearance Cm to control the meshing accuracy
  3. Failure prevention: Monitor the wear of the working tooth surface in 3.2.5.6
