Introduction

Scope and Technical Characteristics of the Standard

This standard applies to container/pallet trailers and bulk cargo trailers used for transporting ULDs (unit load devices), bulk cargo, mail and baggage at airports, and explicitly excludes trailer types used for road use. Core specifications include:

Key safety requirements

5.1 General specifications

  • Must comply with EN 1915-1 basic safety requirements
  • Train marshaling design must prevent collision between adjacent equipment (minimum turning radius ≤7.5m)
  • Control devices must be compatible with protective gloves in an environment of -20℃~50℃

5.3 Platform design requirements

Case:Boeing 747 freighter ULD platform must meet the following requirements

  • Roller diameter ≥50mm, spacing ≤254mm (10 inches)
  • Adjacent roller height difference ≤3mm
  • Guide device bevel angle ≥15°

5.8 Overload Braking System

When equipped, must meet the following requirements:

  • Straight-line braking deceleration ≥ 0.25g
  • Automatic release function (when reversing)
  • Compatibility verification with tractor brakes

Implementation recommendations

Operation specifications

  1. Marshaling order: the heaviest trailer is close to the tractor
  2. Mixed equipment with/without overload braking is prohibited
  3. The maximum number of marshaling must take into account the power of the tractor

Technical evolution analysis

Compared with the 2005 version of EN 12312-11, the 2024 version has the following major changes:

  • Added technical specifications for Ball transfer unit (Appendix C)
  • Clarified the design requirements for 20-foot ULD dedicated trailers (Figure A.12)
  • Strengthened cooperation with IATA AHM 909 Payload Data Interconnection (Appendix D)
