Introduction

Standard Evolution and Technical Background

BS ISO 24613-1:2024, as the UK national implementation version of ISO 24613-1:2024, replaces the 2019 version of the standard. This standard was developed by Technical Committee TS/1, and the main updates include:

Version Core Changes Technical Impact
2019 Edition Initial Release Establish basic model framework
2024 Edition 1. Correct the cardinality of OrthographicRepresentation class
2. Remove the type attribute of CrossREF class
3. Unify the class name style
Improve model accuracy
Simplify implementation complexity
Enhance standard consistency

Core model architecture

LMF core package uses UML modeling language and includes the following key components:

1. Basic class structure

  • LexicalResource: top-level container, managing multiple dictionaries
  • Lexicon: single language dictionary entity, including GlobalInformation metadata
  • LexicalEntry: supports subclassing, associating Form and Sense classes

2. Key association models

Association type Cardinality Application example
LexicalEntry → Form 0..* Arabic root associated with multiple word forms
Sense → Definition 0..* Multilingual definition management
CrossREF association n:n Synonym network construction

Data Category Selection (DCS) Mechanism

The standard adopts a flexible data category management strategy:

1. Standardized data categories

  • Language encoding: Mandatory use of ISO 639 standard
  • Character encoding: must comply with Unicode specifications
  • Grammatical features: includes 24 predefined categories such as grammaticalGender

2. User extension mechanism

It is allowed to add new data categories through User-defined data categories, which must meet the following requirements:

  1. Do not conflict with existing categories
  2. Explicitly define the value range
  3. Document the mapping relationship

Implementation suggestions

1. Model simplification principle

  • Monolingual dictionaries are recommended to use subclassing
  • Complex multilingual resources should use the DCS mechanism first
  • Global attributes should be stored in the LexiconInformation class

2. Cross-dictionary interaction

Verification is required when exchanging data:

Comparison dimensions Key points to check
Structural equivalence Whether class inheritance relationships are compatible
Data category coverage Whether metadata is completely mapped
Extension package dependency Whether additional extension specifications are needed
