Scope

This part of IEC 61097 specifies the performance requirements and test methods for Inmarsat-C shipborne earth stations (SES) for GMDSS and Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) capable of sending and receiving direct print communications, and an Enhanced Group Call (EGC) receiver. Available variants include: Class 0: EGC receiver, either standalone or part of a GMDSS installation, in accordance with the requirements of the Inmarsat Design and Installation Guides (DIGs). Class 1: Basic SES, providing shore-to-ship and ship-to-shore message transmission only. Class 2: Similar to Class 1, but using a shared receiver to provide EGC as an alternative to shore-to-ship transmission. Class 3: Similar to Class 1, but using a standalone receiver to provide EGC. This document complies with the IMO performance requirements, Inmarsat technical characteristics and test procedures, and the general requirements of IEC 60945, unless modifications are explicitly stated in this document. Technical characteristics are essential for GMDSS and LRIT operations and are defined by IMO. This document covers equipment construction and testing, and installation related matters can be found in the Inmarsat Maritime Design and Installation Guides. The requirements of IMO Resolutions MSC.513(105), MSC.263(84) and MSC.306(87) are reproduced in Appendix A. The responsibility for type approval of Inmarsat-C and Inmarsat-EGC is vested in Inmarsat by IMO Resolutions MSC.513(105) and MSC.306(87) (see 4.2.1). Therefore, this document does not reproduce the Inmarsat test procedures in their entirety, but instead references the relevant content from the Inmarsat documents listed in the normative references of this document (Appendix C).
