Core changes and technological evolution of the standard
BS EN ISO 3451-4:2024 is the third revised standard of ISO 3451-4:1998. The main technical updates include:
- New automated equipment method (Method D) is synchronized with ISO 3451-1:2019
- Improve the processing process of volatile additives in flame retardant materials
- Clarify the temperature control requirement of muffle furnace to (850±50)°C
Comparison of test method frameworks
| Material type | Applicable method | Temperature requirement | Special treatment |
| Unfilled polyamide | Method A/D (direct calcination) Method C (sulfation treatment) | 850±50°C | Method C is required when containing halides |
| Glass fiber reinforced material | Method A/D | 850±50°C (reduced to 600±25°C when melted) | Pre-drying treatment is required |
| Material containing flame retardant | Method A/D+DBB treatment | ≥850°C | Add 50% of the sample mass of DBB |
Analysis of key operating points
Safe implementation of DBB treatment method
For glass fiber reinforced materials containing antimony trioxide flame retardant, the standard requires:
- The sample needs to be crushed to a size of less than 1cm×0.5cm×0.2cm
- Add decabromobiphenyl (DBB) powder, the amount of which is 50% of the sample mass
- High-temperature calcination must be carried out in a fume hood to avoid the formation of dioxins
Warning: 600-850°C is the high-risk temperature range for dioxin formation, and the experimental site needs to be equipped with an exhaust gas treatment system.
Implementation suggestions and precision control
According to the PA/glass fiber material precision data provided by the standard:
- Repeatability limit (r) = 0.76% (same laboratory)
- Reproducibility limit (R) = 0.79% (different laboratories)
Operational suggestions:
- When the ash content is <0.01%, the sample amount must be ≥200g to ensure measurement accuracy
- Use Platinum crucible to handle halogen-containing samples to avoid corrosion
- The results are retained to 1 decimal place (such as 33.2%)
Standard application scenarios
This standard is particularly suitable for:
- Quantitative analysis of inorganic fillers in engineering plastics
- Formula Verification of Flame Retardant Polyamide Materials
- Determination of Glass Fiber Content in Recycled Plastics
Note:The test report must include key parameters such as calcination temperature, pretreatment method and DBB dosage.
