Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

BS EN ISO 12311:2023 is the UK's national implementation standard for EN ISO 12311:2023, which completely replaces the 2013 version of the standard. This standard specifies the test methods for sunglasses and related eyewear products, and is used in conjunction with the ISO 12312 series of standards.

Detailed explanation of key test methods

6.1 Frame deformation and lens retention test

Use a ring fixture and pressure bolt device to apply a maximum force of 5N or a displacement of 10% of the lens spacing at the center of the lens, and measure the permanent deformation rate after holding for 5 seconds. The qualified standards are:

  • Deformation rate ≤2%
  • No lens falling off or partial displacement
  • No visible cracks in the frame

6.2 Enhanced durability test

Mechanical fatigue test simulating wearing action:

  1. Fix one temple and make a 60mm diameter circular motion on the other side
  2. After 500 cycles of testing
  3. The change in the distance between the measuring points is ≤5mm

6.3 Sweat resistance test of the frame

Use artificial sweat (lactic acid + sodium chloride) to test in two stages:

Phase 1 (8 hours): Check the overall appearance changes, exclude the joints and screws

Phase 2 (total 24 hours): Focus on detecting corrosion or coating separation at skin contact areas (inside of temple, lower part of lens ring, inside of nose bridge)

Implementation recommendations

Laboratory preparation

  • Update test equipment to meet the specifications shown in Figure 1-5
  • Establish artificial sweat preparation process (ISO 3696 Grade 3 water)
  • Train observers (lighting conditions 1000-2000lx)

Corporate response strategy

  1. Prioritize frame deformation test (6.1) and then durability test (6.2)
  2. Pre-use manufacturer-recommended curing agent for natural material frames
  3. Measurement uncertainty control: mechanical test ±0.5mm, deformation test ±10%

Compliance judgment principle

According to the requirements of Appendix A: When the test result ± uncertainty value overlaps with the limit value, it should be judged as unqualified to ensure user safety.
