Scope
This standard, IEC 60335, covers the safety of electrically powered kitchen machines for household and similar use, with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V. NOTE 101: Examples of appliances within the scope of this standard include bean slicers, berry juice extractors, blenders, can openers, centrifugal juicers, churns, citrus juicers, coffee grinders with a hopper capacity not exceeding 500 g, cream churns, egg beaters, food mixers, food processors, cereal grinders with a hopper capacity not exceeding 3 litres, graters, ice cream makers (including those for refrigerators and freezers), knife sharpeners, knives, meat grinders, pasta makers, potato peelers, choppers, sifters, slicers, etc. Appliances intended for normal household and similar use may also be used by lay persons in shops, light industry, and on farms. However, appliances intended for professional processing of food for commercial consumption are not considered to be intended for household and similar use only. NOTE 102: For example, the use of kitchen machines in bed and breakfast establishments is considered to be intended for household use only. This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 to the extent possible, ensuring compatibility with wiring regulations when appliances are connected to the mains. However, national wiring regulations may vary. If appliances within the scope of this standard also incorporate functions covered by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 applies separately to each function, to the extent justified. The impact of one function on another is considered, if applicable. When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements for the hazards addressed in part 1, part 1 applies. Note 1: This means that the technical committee responsible for the part 2 standard has determined that no specific requirements beyond the general requirements are necessary for the appliance in question. This standard is a product family standard covering appliance safety and takes precedence over horizontal and general standards covering the same subject matter. Note 2: Horizontal and general standards covering hazards do not apply because they were taken into account when developing the general and specific requirements of the IEC 60335 series of standards. For example, for temperature requirements on the surfaces of many appliances, a general standard such as ISO 13732-1 (for hot surfaces) is not applicable in addition to the part 1 or part 2 standards. Appliances conforming to the text of this standard shall not necessarily be considered to comply with the safety principles of this standard if, when inspected and tested, they are found to have other features which impair the level of safety covered by these requirements. Appliances using materials or forms of construction different from those detailed in the requirements of this standard may be inspected and tested according to the intent of the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply with this standard.
