BS EN 3311:2023, as an alternative version of EN 3311:2009, mainly updates the upper limit of the diameter range of titanium alloy bars from 100mm to 300mm. Testing and quality control requirements
- Ultrasonic testing: Diameter ≤100mm shall comply with Class 5 standard, >100mm shall comply with Class 4 standard (according to EN 4050-1)
- Microstructure: It must comply with the equiaxed α phase distribution requirements specified in EN 3114-002, and continuous grain boundary α phase is prohibited
- Macrostructure: 2MA3 level defects are allowed for 50-300mm bars, but central segregation defects such as 2MA40-42 must be excluded
Technological evolution and implementation recommendations
Compared with the 2009 version of the standard, the 2023 version mainly responds to the demand for large-size titanium alloy bars for large rotor components of aero-engines. Notes for implementation:
- When purchasing materials with a diameter of >100mm, special attention should be paid to the ultrasonic test report
- The feed rate needs to be controlled during processing to avoid β phase recrystallization
- Additional low-cycle fatigue testing is recommended for key load-bearing components
