Standard Scope and Application

ASTM F714-24 specifies requirements for polyethylene (PE) plastic pipe manufactured in three sizing systems (DIPS, IPS, Metric) with outside diameters ≥3 in. (90 mm). Key applications include:

• Transport of water, sewage, industrial effluents, and slurries

Dimensional Requirements

Pressure Rating Calculation

PR = 2 × HDS / (DR - 1) where:
HDS = Hydrostatic Design Stress (Table 1)
DR = Dimension Ratio (OD/min wall thickness)

Tolerance Standards

• Wall eccentricity ≤12%
• End diametral reduction ≤1.5% (toe-in)
• OD tolerances per Tables 2/4/6

• Material code (eg, PE4710)
• OD sizing system (DIPS/IPS/Metric)
• Pressure rating (PRXXX for DIPS)
• Manufacturer identification

Quality Control

Manufacturers must conduct:

• Hourly dimensional checks
• Biannual elevated temperature pressure tests
• Visual inspection of all lengths

Case Example: PE4710 pipe (DR11) for potable water requires NSF/ANSI 61 certification and oxidative resistance classification CC2/CC3 when disinfectants are present.
