Introduction

Standard Overview and Technical Background

ASTM D6227-24 defines two grades of unleaded aviation gasoline (UL82 and UL87) designed for use in manufacturer-certified reciprocating spark-ignition aircraft engines. The latest revision of this standard (published in March 2024) maintains the core requirements of the 2018 edition and primarily updates terminology.

Comparison of key indicators of fuel grades

Parameters UL82 UL87 Test method
Motor octane number (minimum) 82.0 87.0 D2700
Research octane number (minimum) - 95.0 D2699
Distillation range (10% evaporation temperature ℃) Basic Components

Permitted: Crude oil refined hydrocarbons, natural gas condensate, certain fatty ethers (MTBE must comply with D5983), synthetic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Intentional addition of methanol/ethanol (except isopropyl alcohol) is prohibited.

Additive Specifications

  • Antioxidant: 12 phenolic compounds, total amount ≤12mg/L
  • Metal Passivator: N,N'-disalicylidene-1,2-propylenediamine ≤3.0mg/L
  • Anti-icing Agent: Diethylene glycol monomethyl ether (0.10-0.15% volume)

Key Test Methods

Test Items Standard Method
Copper Strip Corrosion D130 (50℃×3h)
Sulfur Content D5453 (UV Fluorescence Method)

Implementation Recommendations

Key Points in Production Control

  1. Component Traceability: Only raw material components certified by the refinery are allowed
  2. Lead and Phosphorus Control: Unintentional introduction of lead ≤0.013g/L
  3. Oxygen Content Correction: Net Calorific Value is calculated using Formula X2.7.2

Airport Operating Specifications

  • When the ambient temperature is >29°C, the vapor pressure ≤93kPa must be indicated in the delivery documents
  • Refer to Guide D6469 for microbiological control

Technology Evolution Analysis

This standard originated from its first release in 1998. The main changes in the 2024 version are:

  • Clarified reference to the D4175 terminology standard
  • Maintained the UL87 research method octane number requirement of 95.0 (based on RR:D02-1709 research)
  • Continued to limit ethers such as MTBE/TAME/ETBE/DIPE
