Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

Scope of application and technical parameters

This standard is applicable to the sampling of light fuels with a dry vapor pressure equivalent (DVPE) in the range of 13-110 kPa, with special emphasis on:

  • Reformed fuels containing oxygenates
  • Exclude crude oil sampling (refer to D4057/D4177 standards)
  • SI units are the basic measurement units

Comparison of key technical requirements

Sampling type Applicable container Temperature requirement Filling ratio
Full-layer sampling Glass bottle/metal can 0-1°C 70-85%
Pipeline sampling Fluorinated polyethylene bottle Ambient temperature 80% flushing
Nozzle sampling 125mL special bottle Pre-cooling treatment ≤85%

Key points of standard evolution and implementation

Key points of version update

Compared with D5842-19, the 2023 edition has the following major changes:

  1. New terminology references D4175 and API MPMS Chapter 1
  2. Referencing sampling probe design specifications (Figure 7ABC)
  3. Strengthening precautions for sampling of oxygenated fuels

Implementation recommendations

Critical Control Points:

  • The container must be flushed three times with the fuel to be tested before sampling
  • Sampling from non-slotted risers or dead legs is prohibited
  • Vapor pressure test samples must be maintained at a low temperature chain of 0-1°C

Typical application scenario: Sampling from the fuel gun at a gas station requires the special extension tube shown in Figure 9 to achieve closed sampling.

Safety and Compliance Requirements

Special Warnings of the Standard:

Petroleum vapor is toxic and flammable. The sampling process must strictly avoid: ① Vapor inhalation ② Open flame/spark ignition

The label information must include: sampling time and space location information, fuel brand/grade, and leak-proof seal that complies with DOT transportation regulations.
