Technological Evolution and Industrial Application

Background of Standard Development

This standard originated from the demand for non-destructive testing of castings in the 1970s. In 2012, a major revision introduced Procedure B to solve the problem of testing thick-walled castings. The 2023 version maintains a dual-track parallel system and strengthens:

  1. Compatibility requirements for digital ultrasonic equipment
  2. Acoustic property compensation for martensitic stainless steel
  3. Beam spread correction for curved castings

Typical application case

Turbine cylinder inspection: Procedure B was used to inspect WC6 martensitic stainless steel castings. By compensating for the as-cast surface acoustic energy loss with a 16dB gain, three cluster defects (cumulative area of 7.8in²) were found, which were verified to be micro-shrinkage clusters upon dissection.


Implementation Recommendations

Test Plan Development

  • Thickness ≤ 3 inches [75mm]: Preferably use a 2.25MHz, 1/2-inch probe
  • Thick-walled castings: Use Procedure B with Time Corrected Gain (TCG) technology
  • Complex surfaces: Supplementary angle probe testing (per S1 Supplementary Requirements)

Key Quality Control Points

  1. Calibrate instrument linearity per E317 every 6 months
  2. Use a 0.025-inch [0.64mm] polyurethane film to protect the probe when inspecting as-cast surfaces
  3. Use a 12×12-inch grid to ensure 100% coverage
