Scope
This Recommended Practice is organized as follows: Section 2 describes landscape lighting and the design professionals who influence and practice it. Section 3 defines the lighting design process. Design, site analysis, plans, luminaire location, documentation, site maturation, and maintenance are discussed. Section 4 aids in understanding how nature interacts with the human desire for light. Section 5 discusses the purpose of light in the landscape environment and the design concepts used to create exciting outdoor landscape lighting. Section 6 describes the techniques that can be used to light a landscape and its surrounds. Section 7 describes the assorted landscape elements and the ways in which they should be lit. This includes trees, pathways, steps, stairs, yard art, structures, water features, signage, and flags. Section 8 delivers information on landscape lighting equipment, including luminaires, optics, lenses, mounting devices, wire, and transformers. Section 9 walks through post-installation maintenance. By following the text through these logical steps, lighting professionals new to landscape lighting will develop a firm foundation for the field. Novices to landscape lighting can begin to mold their core understanding of this creative and interesting field. Recommended illuminance levels are discussed in Annex A. The unique requirements of installing landscape lighting, especially those driven by low-voltage power, are not covered here. Information from the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) is included in Annex B and should be reviewed for a fuller grasp of the complexities of landscape lighting. The particulars of low-voltage wiring are also included in Annex B and should be reviewed and understood to develop a better grasp on how to design a low-voltage landscape lighting system. Other areas not covered in this RP: The outdoor environment (refer to ANSI/IES LP-11-20; see Preface), The practice and function of a professional lighting designer, Designing lighting for people in outdoor spaces (refer to ANSI/IES LP-2-20; see Preface). This RP provides information on a wide variety of concerns encountered during the planning and implementation of landscape lighting designs. Salient points are covered herein. Additional information may be found in the documents listed in Annex C.
