ANSI/INCITS 311-1998(R2003) for Information Technology – Magnetic Tape Format for Information Interchange 128-Track, Parallel Serpentine 12.65 mm (1/2 in), 3400 bpmm (86 360 bpi) Run Length Limited Recording
This standard provides the requirements for a 128-track tape format to be used for information interchangeof data between information processing systems, communication systems, and associated equipmentusing standard code as agreed upon by the interchange parties. This standard deals solely with therequirements for recording, with provision made for using a processing algorithm, on magnetic tape.1.2 PurposeThis standard defines the requirements and supporting test methods necessary to ensure interchange atacceptable performance levels. It is distinct from a specification in that it delineates a minimum number ofrestrictions consistent with compatibility in interchange transactions.Except as indicated above, interchange parties complying with the applicable standards should be able toachieve compatibility without the need for additional exchange of technical information. The use of a tapelabel and file structure standard, such as American National Standard for Information systems - Filestructure and labeling of magnetic tapes for information interchange, ANSI X3.27, or equivalent, may beused to provide application interchange information.
