The purpose of this standard is to define the various protection systems for electrical equipment against the risks of explosion, when used in atmospheres in which, habitually or accidentally, there are gases or vapors capable of ignition. It only includes material intended for use in flammable gaseous atmospheres, and not in atmospheres in which other explosion risks may exist, for example, due to the presence of flammable particles or dust.
