Scope
1 Scope of table le The UDC common auxiliaries of place, signified by "brackets-one-to-nine" (1/9), indicate the geographical range, locality or other spatial aspect of an item of information. They may be cited with main numbers when the place aspect is secondary, or combined with different auxiliaries or other place auxiliaries. They may also be used independently, so creating a sequence in which the place facet is the only one expressed —for instance, in indexing certain kinds of map. Examples of use and of combination with other numbers are given in BS 1000M. 2 Scope of this edition This extended edition of part of table le contains the administrative divisions of the United Kingdom and Germany to tertiary level (districts, Kreise etc.). On the principle that there will often be a need for tables at an extended level of detail for one's own country and for certain other users specializing in information about the country concerned, the tables given here are subdivided to a greater level of detail than those in the Master Reference File (see the Foreword) but are compatible with it. They take account of the new administrative arrangements in Germany following reunification in 1990 and in the United Kingdom following reorganizations between 1995 and 1998. At the time of writing, reorganization is imminent in the Republic of Ireland; for the time being, it remains at (417/419), subdivided to county level. The traditional divisions of the UK are retained at (411/429) to allow for historical information. Similarly, provision is made for the obsolete divisions of Eastern Germany, and the subdivisions for the pre-1934 states are retained.
