Our country has entered a rapidly aging phase, with home-based elderly care still being the preferred choice for the vast majority of seniors. However, existing old residential buildings have not adequately taken into account changes in seniors' physical conditions and usage requirements, leading to common safety hazards. Improving the living environment through age-friendly renovations is a prerequisite and important guarantee for home-based elderly care.
Article 4 of the People's Republic of China's Law on the Construction of Barrier-Free Environment clearly stipulates that barrier-free construction should be combined with age-friendly renovations, adhering to the principles of safety and convenience, practicality and ease of implementation, and broad benefits.
Promoting age-friendly renovations and building an elderly-friendly home environment is a systematic project that embodies human-centered, full-cycle, multi-element, and comprehensive characteristics. It involves disciplines such as gerontology, ergonomics, architecture, psychology, sociology, and nursing, covering multiple stages including home assessment, age-friendly design, construction supervision, material equipment selection, and product choice.
Age-friendly renovations, a new field in its early stages, lacks specialized standards in design, construction, products, services, etc. To improve the living environment for seniors, assist enterprises in transitioning to age-friendly upgrades, enhance professional qualities and skills of practitioners, provide targeted references for policymakers, and promote proactive responses to population aging across society, this standard is specially formulated.
This document specifies the target, basic requirements, participants, process management, quality control, and schedule management for the home environment's age-friendly renovations.
