Scope
This document adopts an approach in which actions, in particular control measures and medical surveillance, are specified as a function of the severity of the potential effects. It provides guidance on management practices applicable to hot workplaces and describes: ——procedures for managing work in hot environments; ——guidance on how to apply different international standards in the field of hot environments to assess heat-related risks; ——guidance on organizing medical surveillance of workers in hot environments; ——information for guiding personnel working in hot environments; ——examples of assessments of hot work situations. The procedures described in this document are intended to anticipate problems with work in warm to hot environments by classifying different work situations according to their potential health effects, informing the persons concerned (workers and management) of the severity of these effects, planning the implementation of appropriate preventive measures, and providing medical surveillance of exposed personnel. This document supports good occupational safety and health practice and is applicable to both indoor and outdoor work situations.
