Scope

CSA Preface Standards development within the Information Technology sector is harmonized with international standards development. Through the CSA Technical Committee on Information Technology (TCIT), Canadians serve as the Canadian Advisory Committee (CAC) on ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 on Information Technology (ISO/IEC JTC1) for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), the ISO member body for Canada and sponsor of the Canadian National Committee of the IEC. Also, as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Canada participates in the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (ITU-T). 1 Scope This Recommendation | International Standard defines a set of lossless (bit-preserving) and lossy compression methods for coding bi-level, continuous-tone grey-scale, palletized color, or continuous-tone colour digital still images. This Recommendation | International Standard: - specifies decoding processes for converting compressed image data to reconstructed image data; - specifies a codestream syntax containing information for interpreting the compressed image data; - specifies a file format; - provides guidance on encoding processes for converting source image data to compressed image data; - provides guidance on how to implement these processes in practice.
