Scope
Primary care physicians often lack adequate knowledge of standardized diagnosis and research advancements in vertigo, leading to unclear diagnoses and excessive treatments. Vertigo involves multiple systems and disciplines such as neurology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, and cardiology, making classification complex and diagnosis challenging. Primary care physicians commonly have confusion regarding the classification and concept of vertigo, often attributing it to cervical spondylosis, lacunar infarction, Meniere's disease, etc., and are unfamiliar with recognizing malignant vertigo. There are also misconceptions in treatment, such as overusing antihistamines and excessively treating lacunar infarction, as well as insufficient application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies, leading to delayed recovery of vestibular function and persistent vertigo symptoms. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments for vertigo have a deep historical foundation and significant therapeutic effects. Combining TCM with Western medicine can help rapidly alleviate vertigo symptoms and provide long-term prevention against recurrence. TCM also has good public acceptance, allowing comprehensive treatment approaches. Developing concise, practical guidelines for the integrated diagnosis and treatment of vertigo in primary care settings will help improve the level of vertigo management at the grassroots level and better leverage the advantages of TCM.
