- This document defines a product quality model, applicable to ICT (Information and Communication Technology) products and software products. The product quality model consists of nine characteristics (further broken down into sub-characteristics) that relate to the quality attributes of a product. These characteristics and sub-characteristics provide a reference model for the quality of a product for the purpose of specification, measurement and assessment. NOTE 1 In this document, product refers to an ICT product that is part of an information system. ICT product components include subsystems, software, firmware, hardware, data, communication infrastructure and other elements that are part of an ICT product. The model can be used by multiple stakeholders (including developers, purchasers, quality assurance and control personnel, and independent assessors) throughout the product life cycle for requirements specification and assessment of target product quality. Activities in the product life cycle that can benefit from the use of this model include: ——eliciting and defining product and information system requirements; ——validating the comprehensiveness of the requirements definition; ——determining the design goals for products and information systems and designing the necessary processes to achieve quality; ——determining the test objectives for products and information systems; ——determining quality control criteria as part of quality assurance; ——determining acceptance criteria for products and/or information systems; ——establishing measurements of product quality characteristics to support these activities.
