Scope
This standard defines calculational requirements anddiscusses measurement techniques for estimates of dose rates near light waterreactor (LWR) nuclear power plants due to direct and scattered gamma-rays fromcontained sources on-site. On-site locations outside plant buildings andlocations in the offsite unrestricted area are considered. All sources thatcontribute significantly to dose rates are identified and methods forcalculating the source strength of each are discussed. Particular emphasis isplaced on 16N sources as they are significant sources of direct and scatteredradiation for boiling water reactors (BWRs). The standard specifically excludesradiation from gaseous and liquid effluents. The standard describes theconsiderations necessary to compute dose rates@ including componentself-shielding@ shielding afforded by walls and structures@ and scatteredradiation. The requirements for measurements and data interpretation ofmeasurements are given. The standard includes normal operation and shutdownconditions but does not address accident or normal operational transientconditions. The standard also applies to the gamma dose resulting from Dry FuelStorage Facilities.
