Introduction

The China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) Engineering Department has released the "Design Specification for Safety Integrity Level of Safety Instrumented Systems in Petrochemical Industry" under standard number SH/T 3225-2024, effective from January 1st, 2025. This specification aims to provide a comprehensive guideline for assessing and designing safety integrity levels (SIL) within the context of safety instrumented systems (SIS) in petrochemical plants.

The document details methodologies and criteria necessary to determine SILs according to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61511 standards, ensuring that all relevant processes comply with international best practices. It outlines requirements for risk assessment, safety lifecycle management, as well as maintenance and testing procedures to ensure ongoing compliance.

The implementation of this standard is anticipated to enhance the overall safety performance and reliability of SIS in petrochemical facilities across China, contributing significantly towards reducing potential risks associated with process operations. Stakeholders are encouraged to review and incorporate these guidelines into their respective projects from the designated start date onwards.
