INTRODUCTION The Survey of Occupational Injuries@ Illnesses@ and Fatalities in the Petroleum Industry (OII) is conducted annually. Participation is voluntary and the number of participants varies slightly each year. Therefore@ the reader should exercise caution when using this data to characterize the performance of the entire industry. Participants are asked to submit data according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) guidelines. This report provides incidence rates per 200@000 hours worked for U.S. Employees@ U.S. Contractors@ Non-U.S. Employees@ and Non-U.S. Contractors@ on the same basis as those reported by BLS. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND API began collecting data on workplace injuries@ illnesses@ and fatalities through the Survey of Occupational Injuries@ Illnesses@ and Fatalities in the Petroleum Industry (OII) in 1931. Prior to the 1999 survey@ companies only submitted employee data for their U.S. operations. In 2000@ API expanded the scope of the OII and began collecting employee and contract worker data for U.S. operations and Non-U.S. operations. While conducting the 2001 survey@ API learned that several companies were no longer tracking certain information. Consequently@ it was decided these data fields would be optional in the 2002 survey. The optional data fields are Average Number of Employees@ Job Transfer or Restriction@ All Injury Cases@ and All Illness Cases.
