FOREWORD Motivation is a very important element in all programs designed to develop employee capability to effectively operate offshore drilling and producing facilities without endangering himself or his environment. Moreover@ the types of programs that are useful in motivating an employee to work more safely are also generally applicable to increasing his awareness of and his interest in the needs for protection of his work environment. Although employee safety has received most of the emphasis@ offshore companies are developing extensive motivation programs aimed specifically at pollution prevention. Motivation is the imparting of something (i.e.@ a need or a desire) to an employee that causes that employee to act. As used in this report@ motivations is the desire for the employee to act in such a way as to completely protect himself@ his fellow workers@ and his environment form injury. This brochure is a resume of safety and antipollution motivational programs being used by offshore drilling and producing companies. It is intended to serve as a guide in the planning and implementation of more effective employee safety and anti-pollution motivational programs by all companies that participate in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities. The bulk of the programs presented herein are used by many of the offshore operators. However@ programs which are used by only one or a few of the companies are also included as the users of this brochure may find the unusual programs to be effective in meeting certain of their particular needs. Where materials and services are available from nonindustry sources@ addresses are included so that the users of this brochure may make inquiries for catalogs and additional information. This material was compiled form responses to a survey initiated by the Special Advisory Group on Personnel of the American Petroleum Institute (API) ?C Offshore Operators Committee (OOC) Joint Coordinating committee. The project was completed under the direction of the Offshore Safety and Anti-Pollution ?C Training and Motivation (OSAPTM) Committee@ a subcommittee of the API Executive Committee on Training and Development. In making this report and preparing this brochure@ the American Petroleum Institute makes no warranties as to the accuracy or effectiveness of the material contained herein. The fact that certain programs are included does not constitute an endorsement of those programs nor does the exclusion of any program imply that the American Petroleum Institute disapproves of the excluded items.
