Scope
FOREWORD: This pamphlet is prepared for the purpose of making available in convenient form basic principles and rules of good practice which prevent the creation of fire hazards in the marketing of petroleum products. The marketing of more than 50@000@000 gal. of gasoline daily to millions of customers@ at hundreds of thousands of service stations throughout the United States@ is a work of gigantic proportions. The necessity of accomplishing this work has resulted in a very complete system of distribution@ including suitable facilities for the receipt@ storage@ and distribution of gasoline and other products at or near each center of population. The Committee on Fire Prevention-Division of Marketing-in the preparation of this publication has recognized that the protection of marketing properties against fire consists largely in the prevention of fire ; and it has been the committee's-aim to state principles and practices which@ if followed@ will eliminate known causes of fire in marketing operations. A general use of these principles and practices is urged to the end that the present fire record of the industry-good as it is-may be improved. This publication has been approved by the General Committee of the Division of Marketing of the American Petroleum Institute.
