This document specifies three methods for determining the adhesion of a single coating or a multi-coat system by performing a pull-off test. These methods are:
——Method A: using two test heads, suitable for testing both rigid and deformable substrates;
——Method B: testing from one side only, using a single test head, suitable only for rigid substrates;
——Method C: using test heads, one of which is the painted substrate. These test methods are very useful when comparing the adhesion behavior of different coatings. It is most often used to provide a relative rating of a series of coated panels that show significant differences in adhesion. The test can be applied to a variety of substrates. Different procedures are given depending on whether the substrate is deformable (such as thin metals, plastics and wood) or rigid (such as thick concrete and metal plates). In order to avoid deformation of the substrate during the tensile test, a sandwich construction is usually used. For example, for special applications, the coating can be applied directly to the surface of the test head.
