Scope
This standard defines environmental and social responsibility performance criteria for computers (i.e. desktop computers@ notebook computers@ integrated desktop computer@ portable all-in-one computer@ slates/tablets@ small scale servers@ thin clients@ and workstations) and displays (i.e. monitors and signage displays). The environmental and social responsibility performance criteria relate to substance management@ materials selection@ design for end of life@ product longevity/life-cycle extension@ energy conservation@ end-of-life management@ packaging@ life cycle assessment and carbon footprint@ corporate environmental performance@ and corporate social responsibility Purpose This standard is part of the IEEE 1680 family of standards that provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria aimed to reduce the environmental impact and improve social responsibility associated with electronic products@ and provides an opportunity to secure market recognition for conformant products. This standard is intended to provide a tool for government@ institutional@ corporate and consumer purchasers. The environmental and social responsibility performance criteria of this standard are intended to define a measure of environmental and social responsibility attributes controlled or influenced by the manufacturer throughout the product life cycle in: the design and manufacture of the product; the delivery of specified services that are associated with the product; and in associated corporate performance characteristics. This standard is an environmental and corporate responsibility leadership standard@ defined with the intention that only leading products@ i.e.@ approximately 25 to 35 percent of the market@ would be able to qualify to the base or Bronze level@ at the date of publication of this standard. As the environmental and social responsibility performance of products that are available in the marketplace improves@ the standard will be updated and revised to set a higher performance standard for leadership products
