Scope

This part of ISO 14240 specifies a method for estimating soil microbial biomass by measuring the total extractable organic biomass material derived primarily from freshly killed microorganisms. This method is also applicable to estimating microbial nitrogen and microbial ninhydrin-reactive nitrogen in soils, but this part of ISO 14240 describes only the measurement of extractable organic carbon. The fumigation extraction method is applicable to aerobic and anaerobic (flooded, paddy) soils over the entire soil pH range. Biomass can also be measured in soils containing actively decomposing substrates and supersaturated potassium sulfate solutions.
