Scope 1.1 This standard applies to forklifts of categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7; in addition, certain articles apply to category 6 vehicles, non-motorized high-lift forklifts, as well as personnel and load transport vehicles. See Appendix B for the list and description of various categories of these vehicles. 1.2 The purpose of this standard is to promote forklift safety and minimize the risk of injury to workers by prescribing the essential elements of a forklift safety program, as well as requirements for the design, the construction, maintenance, inspection and safe use of forklifts, as well as the training of forklift operators. This standard also presents an overview of the recommended qualifications for forklift operator trainers and for maintenance technicians of these vehicles. In addition, Canadian regulatory bodies in federal, provincial or other jurisdictions may use this standard as a guide for the development and adoption of laws, regulations and directives on the use of forklifts, as part of training programs. health and safety at work. 1.3 Chapter 4 of this standard prescribes the key elements of a forklift safety program, including general requirements for the health and fitness of forklift operators. 1.4 Chapter 5 of this standard establishes safety standards for the design and construction of forklifts. 1.5 Chapter 6 of this standard presents the minimum requirements for familiarization sessions and training courses (for beginners, permanent and advanced) for the use of forklifts and their various accessories. Notes: 1) Due to differences between the various models of Category 6 vehicles (non-motorized high-lift forklifts and personnel and load transport vehicles), only certain parts of Chapter 6 may be relevant; however, operators of vehicles in this category must be given appropriate training. 2) Professional training and/or familiarization of forklift operators for certain types of forklifts that have special requirements, that require specialized equipment and/or that are used in a specific work environment are in addition to the basic requirements relating to training which are prescribed in this standard. 1.6 Chapter 7 of this standard provides an overview of the minimum qualifications required for trainers delivering courses within a forklift operator training program (see Chapter 6). 1.7 Chapter 8 of this standard covers the inspection, maintenance and repairs of forklifts and their accessories. 1.8 Chapter 9 of this standard provides an overview of the minimum qualifications that service technicians responsible for inspecting and maintaining forklifts must have (see Chapter 8). 1.9 In this standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is, a requirement that the user must comply with to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do and “may” indicates a possibility or advice. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The legends of the figures and equations are also part of these.
