Scope
The Effect of Chemically Accelerated Vibratory Finishing on Gear Metrology Lane Winklemann@ Mark Michaud@ Gary Sroka@ REM Chemicals@ Inc.@ Joseph Arvin@ Arrow Gear Company@ Ali Manesh@ Power Transfer Systems Manufacturing Chemically accelerated vibratory finishing is a commercially proven process that is capable of isotropically superfinishingmetals to an Ra < 1.0 ??in. Gears have less friction@ run significantly cooler and have lower noise and vibration when this technology is applied. Scuffing@ contact fatigue (pitting)@ and bending fatigue are also reduced or eliminated both in laboratory testing and field trials. This paper presents studies done on aero- space Q13 spiral bevel gears showing that the amount of metal removed to superfinish the surface is both negligible and controllable.Media selection andmetal removalmonitoring procedures are described ensuring uniform surface finishing@ controllability and preservation of gear metrology.
