AASHTO Standard Practice for Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size

AASHTO Designation: R 76-231

This standard covers the reduction of large samples of aggregate to appropriate sizes for testing using techniques intended to minimize variations in measured characteristics between test samples and the larger sample. It establishes procedures for reducing aggregate samples collected in the field or produced in the laboratory to convenient sizes for conducting multiple tests to describe the material and measure its quality. The methods are conducted such that smaller test samples represent the larger sample and, consequently, the total supply of material. Individual test methods provide minimum masses of material to be tested.
