Scope
This technical report describes methods for measuring@ analyzing@ and quantifying packet delay properties at packet interfaces for studying packet-based methods used for transporting synchronization (time/phase and/or frequency). The report includes definitions and descriptions of Packet Delay Variation (PDV) and metrics. Attention is paid to the ability of packet-based methods to employ packet-selection methods to improve performance. The material includes guidance regarding the strengths@ the area of applicability@ and how to best use the metrics. The treatment is mathematical in nature and is not dependent on the protocol underlying the packet-based methods (e.g.@ PTP@ NTP@ CES)@ though any special considerations required for a particular protocol will be identified.
