This standard specifies an application method for Vickers and Knoop microhardness testing for metallic coatings. This method is applicable when the hardness test (macrohardness) is not appropriate due to the high loads it implies and, consequently, when the effort exerted by the indenter must be less than 10 N, as is the case of deposits. electrolytic, autocatalytic deposits, spray metallization coatings and anodic layers on aluminum. To obtain satisfactory results, it is necessary to have a sufficient coating thickness, as well as to carry out tests on cross sections (see sections 7.3 and 7.4). NOTE- It is worth drawing attention to the fact that the general standard on Vickers and Knoop microhardness testing is currently being prepared by ISO/TC 164 "Mechanical testing of metals". This technical committee also prepares standards for the verification of microhardness testing equipment and for the verification of standardized reference blocks for use in this equipment.
