Scope
1.1. This method covers the determination of the properties of semisolid bituminous materials under the influence of heat and air. The effects of heat and air are evaluated by measuring the change in selected bitumen properties (e.g., penetration, viscosity, etc.) before and after the test. 1.2. All values are expressed in either the International System of Units (SI) or the Imperial System of Units and are to be regarded as standard in each case. The values in the two systems may not be exact equivalents and each system should be used independently. 1.3. WARNING—Mercury has been classified as a hazardous substance by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several other state agencies as a potential cause of damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver. Mercury and its vapors may be harmful to health and corrosive to materials. Use caution when handling mercury or mercury-containing products and refer to the applicable Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the EPA website for more information. The sale of mercury and mercury-containing products to certain states may be prohibited. 1.4. This standard does not claim to address all safety concerns associated with its use. It is the user's responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5. The quality of test results depends on the competence of the personnel performing the procedures, the performance, calibration and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the requirements of R 18 are generally considered to have competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection capabilities. Compliance with R 18 alone does not fully guarantee reliable results, which depend on many factors; following R 18 or other similar guidelines can evaluate and control some of these factors.
