Scope
This technical report summarizes T1's current views on the various Adaptive Differential Pulse code Modulation (ADPCM) algorithms that have been considered by the various standardization bodies. These views may change in the future. As a result of the recent reorganization of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)@ the CCITT was restructured and its name changed to the Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T). To avoid confusion@ the old nomenclature has been retained throughout this report. Purpose The purpose of this technical report is to: explain the general principles of the operation of ADPCM algorithms; identify the difference between the various ADPCM algorithms currently in use in the network; list the references that contain the experimental evaluation of these various algorithms. Application The intended use of this document is to provide background information on ADPCM algorithms. In writing this report@ the purpose of Working Group T1A1.6 was not to develop a standard@ bit to make technical information widely available within the telecommunications industry.
