This technical report presents a framework for describing the service conditions of actuators and their accessories (such as solenoid valves, limit and proximity switches, positioners, etc.). The document identifies common hazards (such as thermal stress, extreme pressures, chemical exposure, mechanical shock and vibration, etc.) and service conditions; identifies common methods for reducing the risk of each hazard (such as material selection, coating selection, etc.); and identifies common industry technical standards that may certify equipment as resistant to the hazard. This framework can be applied to:
•Actuator design specifications • Mounting hardware required to secure the actuator to the valve • Accessories to monitor and adjust the actuator position Not included in this framework are recommendations for nuclear applications, which have detailed specifications requiring that each actuator design be certified for one or more environmental extremes (such as acceleration and vibration from seismic events, radiation exposure, immersion, and extreme temperatures). This technical report does not replace or override the user specifications for each application. The user should specify details for each application environment (including intrusion hazards, hazardous area classifications, certification requirements and other local conditions such as ambient temperature range, humidity, seismic requirements, etc.) and actuator performance (such as design type, safety factors, travel speed, failure location, override options, etc.), as well as any documentation requirements (such as material certifications, sizing calculations, etc.).
