Scope
FIELD OF APPLICATION 1.1 This standard sets out a test method and criteria for determining the fire resistance of grease ducts when exposed to a standardized fire. The requirements are intended to evaluate the ability of the grease duct to resist the spread of fire. Refer to Appendix A for more information. 1.2 This standard also covers requirements for evaluating the ability of the duct to prevent adjacent combustibles from igniting in the event of an internal fire in the grease duct. Refer to Appendix A for more information. 1.3 Grease ducts to which these requirements apply shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of the National Building Code relating to ventilation of the commercial cooking process. 1.4 This standard does not include requirements for combustibility, surface flammability and possible smoke development of coatings or insulating materials used to protect the grease duct. NOTE 1: The requirements used to evaluate the combustibility of building materials in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada are found in the standards: CAN/ULC S114, Standard Test Method for Determining the Incombustibility of Building Materials and ULC-S135, Standard Test Method for Determining Combustibility Parameters of Building Materials Using an Oxygen Consumption Calorimeter (Cone Calorimeter). NOTE 2: Requirements used to evaluate flame spread and smoke development of construction materials and assemblies in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada are found in the standards: CAN/ULC-S102, Standard Test Method, Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials and Assemblies and CAN/ULC-S102.2, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Flooring Coverings and Various Materials and Assemblies.
